Professor Sylvia Pender is an Associate Professor in Mucosal Immunology whose research focuses on immune mediated tissue inflammation and wound healing. She was one of the first to discover the involvement of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the immune mediated responses which lead to mucosal tissue inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases. Her current research focuses on newly discovered functions of MMPs and their related proteins which play important roles in anti-inflammatory, tissue remodelling and anti-microbial infection processes.
She is investigating Matoke’s novel engineered Reactive Oxygen® products and analogues which make use of the RO® technology to tackle multi-drug resistant strains of bacteria to help improving wound healing. Preliminary results have demonstrated that the engineered gel not only directly killed antibiotic resistant bacteria but also importantly boosted the host immune system fight against infections.
Due to their immunomodulatory strategies, the Reactive Oxygen® products offer exciting opportunities in a huge variety of clinical settings which include the treatment of surgical wounds and chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers and burns.
